Views from a Balcony

An enjoyable evening of new short plays in ‘Views from a Balcony’ at the Cork Arts Theatre

Ten brand-new, ten minute plays will have their world premieres at the Cork Arts Theatre from Tuesday 18th to Saturday 22nd April as part of the venue’s ‘Views from a Balcony’ event.

This is the third in the ‘Views from…’ series that the Cork city-centre theatre established in 2015. The event was conceived in order to encourage new writing for the stage and this year saw a total of 56 plays submitted for consideration. Ten of the submissions were then selected for production and the various directors and cast members have been working for a number of weeks to bring the characters and stories to life on stage during the week after Easter.

James Horgan, Chairman of the Cork Arts Theatre and organiser of the event said, “We were absolutely delighted with the level of interest shown by writers in the event this year. We have had entries from as far away as Israel, as playwrights rose to the challenge of creating short plays that take place entirely on a balcony setting.”

James went on to say, “This event has proved to be very popular with our audiences as they get to see ten short plays each night that range from comedy to serious drama – there’s something for everyone to enjoy. It is a wonderful night at the theatre. It also brings together some of the best acting and directing talent that Cork has to offer.”

The Cork Arts Theatre celebrated its 40th anniversary last year and over the years it has always encouraged new writing for the stage. It now hosts three new writing events each year – the ‘One Act Playwright Awards’, the ‘10 x 10 Minute Play’ event and, of course, the ‘Views from…’ series in which playwrights must write for a specific setting.

The 100-seat venue is centrally located on Carroll’s Quay, just over the bridge from Cork Opera House (directly across the road from the Carroll’s Quay car park) and a full list of all shows can be found on their website at

Tickets for ‘Views from a  Balcony’ are €13 and €10 concessions. Tickets can be booked at the box office, by phone on 021 450 5624 or online.
